Tethering options, radio control, video? No thank you, no thank you. For me, for instance: do you want to set up flash? Nope. Note that the interactive website itself would be effectively customizable too, because you'd be asked if you want things as you go along. Then you load this "customized firmware" into your camera and a.) you've got every capability you need b.) it's where you want it, because you put it there and b.) you know what all of your menu items mean because you chose them and you've read through the explanations of every menu item that exists on your camera. For example, if you always process your JPEGs in post you simply wouldn't need any of the JPEG processing options. Ideally it would let you configure the menus themselves by adding or deleting items, such that the menus contained the things you might need to change on the fly but not everything else. You would assign functions to buttons at that time, set up the custom modes the control (PASM) dial, pick the focus mode setups you want to have available to you, and so forth. As you go through page after page of the website, it asks you how you want the camera configured, and you make your selections. Then it runs you through a sensible explanation of the various features available and what they mean and what they allow you to do-most maybe a paragraph long but expandable if you need more information about it-and asks you if you want that feature available. If the level you choose is too confusing to you, just revert to the next one down. That's to prevent you from having to wade through explanations of plane-of-focus and what tracking is and what ISO means, if you don't need that. First it ascertains your basic level-new to photography, experienced, or expert. The website is takes you through a setup tutorial, in stages. The first thing you do when you get it is to plug it in to your computer and go to the dedicated setup website. The best way to fix the menu problem would be with an interactive setup/tutorial website that transfers your chosen settings to your camera.
I can't believe I haven't written about this before, because it's been in my head for years. But that's a different post for a different day. Cameras are just too complicated now for paper manuals and mazes of menus. That way everything could be explained adequately and systematically. I really want someone to switch camera setup to interactive screens online which you then transfer to the camera.
